AMAZONIA IN PASTEL MINT WITH CARAMEL TORT ARMS AND MAUVE LENSES
In Greek mythology, the Amazons were a tribe of fierce women warriors related to Scythians and Sarmatians who gloried war, hunting, and sexual freedom. They dwelled on the fringes of the known world and were the mythic archenemies of the ancient Greeks. Heracles and Achilles displayed their valour in duels with Amazon queens, and the Athenians revelled in their victory over a powerful Amazon army. In historical times, Cyrus of Persia, Alexander the Great, and the Roman general Pompey tangled with Amazons. Notable queens of the Amazons are Penthesilea, who participated in the Trojan War, and her sister Hippolyta, whose magical girdle, given to her by her father Ares, was the object of one of the labours of Heracles. Diodorus mentions that the Amazons travelled from Libya under Queen Myrina. Amazon warriors were often depicted in battle with Greek warriors in Amazonomachies in classical art. The Greeks were not the only people enchanted by Amazons, the warlike women of nomadic cultures inspired exciting tales in ancient Egypt, Persia, India, Central Asia, and China.
